Top-ranked Microfinance Institution Used Multilingual Documentation & Reached 2+ Million Borrowers

About the Customer

Our customer is a group that provides microfinance services in rural and semi-urban areas of India. Their mission is to support small enterprises and companies, primarily owned by women, by providing them with group loans, MSME credit, and startup funding.

Early Insight

One thing that stood out was that most of their borrowers prefer to communicate in their own language, despite having branches in several states. That meant every form, loan agreement, and awareness leaflet had to 'speak' in a way that made people feel safe.

Challenge

The institution faced three critical challenges:

  • Multilingual communication: Most loan agreements, repayment schedules, and product brochures were available only in English or Hindi. Borrowers in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Odisha often signed documents they didn’t fully understand, leading to hesitation and mistrust.
  • Regulation: RBI mandates required crystal-clear communication of loan terms, repayment obligations, and borrower rights. A single mistranslation could mean non-compliance.
  • Scalability: Tens of thousands of contracts were being generated every month. Manual processing was unsustainable, overwhelming teams with paperwork.

Our Solution

Instead of just offering translations, we helped them reimagine the workflow:

  • Built a glossary of critical financial terms, including interest rate, penalty, tenure, and moratorium, ensuring consistency across all languages.
  • Integrated with their Loan Management System (LMS) so that agreements instantly entered the translation cycle and returned borrower-ready.
  • Used AI translation engines with financial linguists reviewing critical borrower-rights portions for accuracy and compliance.

How It Worked in Real Life

The technology retained frequently used phrases through translation memory, validated numbers and units before delivery, and supported nine Indian languages from Tamil to Bengali. What once required endless email chains became a straight-through process.

Impact

Within six months, the impact was visible both to the customer and their borrowers:

impact-turnaround

  • Turnaround time dropped by almost two-thirds — contracts that once took three days were ready in less than 24 hours.
  • Costs reduced by ~40%, freeing budget for expansion.
  • System managed 50,000+ documents per quarter, even during peak disbursement cycles.
  • Compliance teams reported less than 1% inaccuracies, ensuring audit confidence.
  • Borrowers receiving agreements in their native language scored 30% higher on understanding and trust during orientation events.
  • Group loan uptake increased due to improved borrower confidence.

It wasn’t simply about faster translations. The goal was ensuring access to finance. By creating contracts and disclosures in borrowers’ everyday language, the institution made things safer and built the trust that microfinance depends on.
